I started writing this newsletter about a year ago, mostly as an outlet for the stories that weren’t appropriate to cover in my day job at a national media organization, but still seemed top of mind for people across my social circles.
Which bankers got the biggest bonuses last year? How are young adults spending their money? And where can I find the best Guinness pour in the city? The respective answers were RBC, $82 latte art classes, and Saint John’s Tavern.
The feedback was positive, but I’ll be the first to admit it didn’t come across as a serious publication. I think there’s a real opportunity to share interesting stories here, so I’ve decided to start over: Welcome to a new era of Milk Bag.
I won’t share what’s driving this decision because its the secret to the magic I’m trying to create here, not to mention it would likely leave many of you dozing off at your desks. What I can tell you is a lot of people I talk to still don’t know where to consistently find stories that feel relevant to them and are written in a tone that resonates. Bridging that gap is how The Peak sold for $5 million, and it’s still a massive opportunity for anyone who’s up for the challenge.
Starting Monday, every edition will include a mix of original stories and what I think is the most important news on the internet. Through it all I plan to explore ways of working with the brands I’m most excited about, media and otherwise.
I first mapped out a vision for a newsletter like this seven (!!) years ago and I’m excited to give it a try. If you have story tips or ideas — I want to know what your friends and colleagues are talking about — email sarah@milkbag.ca. Let’s have some fun.
